JINX UPDATE #4: So it’s official: the Z-Burger Curse is a thing. The Nationals were ONE STRIKE away from winning the series over the Cardinals Friday night. Not once, not twice, but FIVE TIMES St. Louis was down to their last strike but alas, a Washington series win, and yes, free burgers for all, was not meant to be. Instead, the Cardinals advanced to the NLCS, with a heart-wrenching-greasy-tear-jerking 9-7 win over the Nats, sending all of D.C. into depression. Chicago’s got the Billy Goat. Boston had The Babe. D.C. now has the Z-Burger Curse.

JINX UPDATE #3: The Nats (and free burgers) are still alive as Jason Werth sent the series to a fifth game tonight with a walk-off solo shot in the 9th inning to give D.C. the win, 2-1. So, it’s either free Z-Burger on Saturday or none. At all.

JINX UPDATE #2: And the Nats lose again, this time getting shutout at home by the Cardinals, 8-0. They need a win tomorrow to keep alive in the series. Oh, and to keep D.C.’s free burger hopes alive too, of course…

JINX UPDATE: The Nats are winless since the Z-Burger press release was issued, getting rocked by the Cards Monday in Game 2, 12-4.

Um, did Z-Burger just jinx the Nats? God, we certainly hope not.

Now, we’d never bemoan a joint wanting to hook up free burgers, but we can’t help but feel a little wary after receiving a press release offering “”Free Burgers the Day After Series Win with Secret Password NatZ” from Z-Burger this afternoon.

The hometown boys currently hold a 1-0 lead over the defending World Series champs and, hopefully, this beef-ridden offer doesn’t throw a greasy wrench in the whole damn thing.

From the release: “With one road win down, Z-Burger is planning a celebration with free burgers for all Nationals fans should the team claim their first-ever National League Division Series title this week.  According to owner Peter Tabibian, WHEN the Nats win the series, three D.C. Z-Burgers will be offering free burgers for fans the following day, from Noon-6pm. All they have to do is show up during these hours and say the secret password – NatZ  – and they will be treated to any single hamburger or cheeseburger of their choice.”

The offer is valid at the Tenleytown, Southwest and Columbia Heights Z-Burgers and will hook up one free burger per person the day after the Nats win. If the Nats wrap up the NLDS on Wednesday, free burgs will be available Thursday, October 11. If it takes ‘em til Thursday, get the freebies on Friday. If the series goes the distance, the victory beef will be up for grabs on Saturday, October 13. The free burgers will be available from noon until 6 p.m.

Here’s hoping this is a just a bold, dead-on-balls-accurate soothsaying deal and not a case of counting the burgers before they hit the grill.
