Brace yourself, Northern Virginia– Shake Shack has landed. At 11 a.m. Monday, the NYC burger slingers' fifth Washington, D.C. area location opened on the brand new plaza at Tysons Corner, bringing the ShackBurger to the commonwealth for the very first time. Burger Days was on hand for the beefy inauguration, as hordes of shoppers and nearby office workers descended upon the joint, filling the space to capacity at lunchtime. Nestled in the corner of the outdoor plaza, the first thing we noticed about the location is the size– it's tiny. The newest Shack is far smaller than both the DuPont and K Street restaurants, seating just 18 inside with space for another 50 on the patio. "It reminds me of the original Shake Shack in Madison Square Park," VP of Operations Zach Koff tells Burger Days (the first-ever Shack is a small kiosk with no indoor seating at all). Given its unique location – at a shopping mall and steps from the Metro's new Silver Line – Koff says he expects the "to-go" market to be big at Tysons with people eating outside on the terrace, walking around the mall or riding on the train. And what kind of fries will come along side those burgers on the run? After last Friday's news that Shake Shack would be reverting back to the beloved crinkle cuts this November, we figured we had a few more months of fresh-cuts to deal with before the switch. Imagine our surprise when we rolled up to find tray after tray of zig-zagging spuds basking in the sun. Yes, Virginia, CRINKLES ARE HERE. Koff tells us both decisions – the initial switch last year and the latest reversal – weren't easy but in the end it was clear: the people love crinkles. As with all Shake Shacks, Tysons features its very-own custard, the Tysons Treat, coming to the cup with vanilla custard, banana, chocolate sprinkles and Pollystyle chocolate graham crackers with five percent of all Treat sales going towards Potomac Conservancy. With 53 restaurants worldwide, D.C. is the second largest domestic market for Shake Shack, trailing only NYC. And even though Shake Shack Tysons is less than 24-hours old, Koff didn't shut the door on the possibility of future Virginia locations. While there's nothing concrete now, he says the whole D.C. market has been so positive and they're always scouting out locations. Bring 'em on.
