Opulence. Holy Cow has it. It's no mini giraffe, but the Del Ray burger joint sure knows how to party in style as evidenced by its 1st anniversary celebration Wednesday with a top-to-bottom gilded cheeseburger. The burger, complete with golden bun, patty, lettuce, onions, pickles and cheese, was given the Midas Touch thanks to a coat of edible gold spray by Holy Cow's Bill Blackburn. But despite looking like an idol from an ancient burger-worshiping civilization, it tasted like a straight up cheeseburger...with a tinge of affluence.

In the glow of the golden burger, (L to R) the Holy Cow crew's “Mango Mike” Anderson, Donna Anderson, Bill Blackburn and Myles Wickliffe with ACT for Alexandria's John Porter.

Holy Cow, the neighbor and sister restaurant of Pork Barrel BBQ in Alexandria, is known for its eclectic lineup of burgers ranging from the pulled-pork-and-gouda-topped Holy Pig, The Popper with fried jalapenos, garlic aioli, cream cheese, chipotle ketchup and bacon to its fancy-ass Sacré Bleu with brie, truffle honey, bacon and caramelized onion. They're also incredibly serious about their fries with a whole section on the menu devoted to the fried spuds which include classic hand-cut, truffle salt, cajun style, garlic style, chili cheese fries and sweet potato fries served with a side of marshmallow dipping sauce (for real).
One of Holy Cow's less opulent burgers: the Southern with fried green tomato, pimento cheese and cajun remoulade.

In addition to contributing to our weight gain, the beef-on-bun slingers also give to a cause that doesn't add to our ever-increasing BMIs. With each burger sold, Holy Cow donates 25 cents to ACT for Alexandria, an organization that benefits over 100 charities in the Alexandria area (diners select which charity they want the money to go to when they order). Since they opened last November, the burger joint has donated over 68,000 quarters to the various charities with the most popular recipient being the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. If you're hoping to get your hands on a golden burger from Holy Cow, sorry, but you're out of luck. This gold-plated beauty was a one-of-a-kind creation and has long since found its way into our stomachs. But, hey, if you're feeling crafty, you can always make your own. Holy Cow | 2312 Mt.
