brgr battleWe're used to trekking around town getting our burger on, and while that's fun and all, all that walking cuts into our eating and drinking time. So when the burgers congregate all in one place, it makes us very, very happy. We're giddy about the event taking place at the end of the month, but now we're even more so because there's another clash of the beef taking place this summer on the Commonwealth's side of the Potomac. On July 20, the BRGR Battle (no, not that BRGR) is bringing a "ground round smackdown" to Ballston featuring a lineup of burger slingers going head-to-head in an afternoon full of beef, beer, music and games. Yup, all things that are good. Each battle participant is tasked with cooking up 3.5 ounce "sliders" using a maximum of four toppings with the winner decided by attendees. The first three competitors have been announced with the rest set to be revealed in the following weeks. So far, the roster includes Big Buns Gourmet Grill from Arlington, D.C.'s Black and Orange and alumni from the Georgetown University Grilling Society (or GUGS-- pronounced "jugs"). (UPDATE: Rustico has joined the greasy party as contestant #4. UPDATE #2: Ballston's Willow Restaurant is the fifth and final participant,) We've done the tummy tango with Big Buns and B&O before but just the existence of GUGS was new to us. Turns out it's a student-run organization that's been grilling and slinging the beef at GU on nice days for over 10 years now and Battle organizer Craig Carey says their burgers are "some of the best in the DMV." Word 'em up. Tickets to the BRGR Battle are $22* in advance ($27 day of) and get you a burger from each of the five (and possibly six) competitors. Because we had a calculator handy, we're figured out that comes to over a pound of meat for your face. And since you're going to need something to wash all that beef down, New Belgium is providing the lubricant with $3.50 draft boozers. They'll also be bringing their Tour de Fat trailer with a bunch of outdoor games like cornhole, washers and something called Rolle Bolle. Providing the soundtrack for the afternoon's burger and boozing will be the all-90's D.C. band White Ford Bronco.. The whole thing goes down at noon on July 20 in the Ballston Courtyard out front of Big Buns (4401 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington) and runs until 4 p.m. And so you don't feel too bad about gluttoning it up, a portion of tickets sales is going to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society *Buy four and get a discount of eight bucks.
